Anyone have/know of a good utility for checking dead
bookmarks? (or does Firefox do this and I simply can't figure out
how?)

My Favorites folder needs a good cleaning.

Try Brabec's updated bookmark links checker extension for FF1.0. The
previous version mention on
<http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=14> doesn't work for
FF1.0.

I'm still playing with it, but anything that can help me handle a
bloated bookmark file with over 1400 bookmarks in a subfolder titled
"Guidelines" alone ...

After installation, Brabec's utility shows up on your "Manage Bookmarks"
toolbar as a [Check] button.

* Open your bookmarks with the bookmark manager. [Bookmarks|Manage
bookmarks]

* Select the bookmarks you want checked with ^A. n.b Select for a folder
does not Select for the contents of any subfolders. You'll have to open
subfolders as well prior to doing your ^A. If you have a sload of
bookmarks, you might want to check the bookmarks in manageable chunks.

* Click [Check].

The one problem (feature!) I haven't yet found an answer to is dealing
with the code with which the utility marks each bookmark.

1 -- [!] seems to mark bookmarks to javascript utilities &c. (Blogroll
It! S'nURL and others, f'rex)

Then there's a checkmark, which I assume means OK, but there's also a
diamondbox with a circle center, a questionmark and a big fat red X.

The red X means kaput, but I haven't sussed out what the questionmark or
the diamondbox mean. Those marks are showing up on some very reasonable
things: Blogger, Gmail, Google News, &c.

2 -- The utility marks show up on my items in my personal toolbar
folder. Ick. Who wants all those ???? up there?

3 -- The utility marks do not show on items in Bookmark Manage mode,
only if you pull up your bookmarks list with a ^B so I'm getting dizzy
with my back and forth. I need to track down some discussions on the
bookmark checking extension. I tracked it down for the new year, but
haven't used it much yet, haven't even finished checking all my bookmarks.

A PLUS! is that the utility creates a .bak file for your bookmarks
should you decide you want to go back to the original version.

Good luck with the housekeeping.

The diamondbox means the link was updated. I'm assuming ? means, "dunno."

Why Blogger would show up with a ? (couldn't find? ran out of time?
automated programs not allowed to check link status?) is another question.

<http://www.internet-resources.com/writers/> shows up with a check while
<http://www.towse.com/links/> page is a ? Same hosting service. Odd.

Onward.

AKA RTFM:

X - the page does not exist
! Status of the page could not be determined
nifty arrow - page has been redirected to a new location
? status of the page cannot be determined
diamondbox - page has been updated since your last visit
check - page has not been updated since your last visit

Options:
Use HTTP Request Method "HEAD" instead of "GET"
Check Bookmark folders recursively
Open every updated link in a new tab

Feliz año nuevo.

Good.

Turns out I solved my final puzzle: if you are in the Bookmarks Manager,
you can add a column ("BLC") to the URL description. BLC shows the
?/check/diamond/!/ code the booklink checker has assigned each URL.
